Book Blitz, Excerpt & Giveaway: More Than Magic (Books of the Kindling #1) by Donna June Cooper

More Than Magic
by Donna June Cooper
Series: Books of the Kindling, #1
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Cover Designer: Kanaxa
Genre: Contemporary Romance with a touch of Magic
Release Date: February 4, 2014

A malignant secret could turn her mountain sanctuary into their tomb.

DEA agent Nick McKenzie is sure magic exists—a dangerous drug called Smoky Mountain Magic that’s wreaking havoc on the streets of Atlanta. He’s also sure that locating and eliminating the source could mean his death.

When he arrives undercover on Woodruff Mountain, the beautiful owner’s anxious attempts to scare him off tell him something’s afoot, and it’s not her secret patch of a rare, ancient species of ginseng.

As her dream of seeking medicinal plants in the Amazon fades into the distance, Grace Woodruff struggles to come to terms with an inherited magical gift she didn't want, and searches desperately for the meaning behind her late grandfather’s final, cryptic message.

The last thing she needs underfoot is a handsome, enigmatic writer recovering from a recent illness. Until an accidental touch unleashes a stunning mystical force and Grace senses the wrath of a malicious blight at the heart of the mountain. Now she must choose between her need to hide her gift from the world…and her desire to save Nick’s life.

Warning: This book contains a fiery redhead whose magic cannot be contained and a handsome DEA agent whose final case might give him a second chance at life.

“So—Granny Lily?” he asked again.

Grace took a deep breath. “Granny Lily was a healer—an Appalachian Granny Woman. A witch.”

“Witch?” he paused a moment, digesting the word. “You’re kidding, right?”

Grace shook her head and started walking away from the cemetery and back into the meadow. “Granny Witches weren't witches in the sense we think of today. They were the midwives and healers of the community. For folks isolated up in these mountains with no medical care, they were the doctors.”

Nick followed behind, taking a quick sip of his champagne. “Witch doctor?”

She grinned at him. “Well, yes. In the sense that a witch doctor is the healer in their community. The shaman. The expert in herbal medicine.”

“Witch doctor,” he repeated.

“It’s a tradition that’s passed down in families. In this case from mother to daughter to granddaughter. One woman per generation,” Grace went on. “Some claim it goes back to ancient times.”

Nick stopped. “So, are you—”

She faced him. “What?”

“A witch?”

Nick watched Grace smile and hold out her glass. “Hang on to this for me.”

Nick stared at it for a moment, wondering why she didn't just answer “no”. Then he took it carefully, holding the bottle under his arm.

Shaking out the blanket, Grace laid it on the grass and knelt down, holding her hands up for her glass and the bottle, which he handed over.

“Sit,” she said smiling up at him. “Pretend it’s a picnic.”

As if on cue, Pooka ran to see what they were up to. When he realized no food was involved, he resumed scouting the edges of the meadow.

Nick paused, wondering if he should make a dash for his SUV and get off this mountain while he still could. But something made him sit.

“So,” he took a deep breath, as if he was about to set foot on some strange new world he didn't understand. “Witch?”

She twisted sideways, managing to sit gracefully on the blanket without spilling a drop of champagne. He was beginning to wonder if she had faked being tipsy.

“Remember, I said not in the ‘double, double toil and trouble’ kind of way.”

“So, no cauldrons or eye-of-newt things going on?”

“Well, actually, the old cauldron you see in the front yard of a lot of Southern homes used to mean there was a Granny Witch in the house, but—”

“Don’t you have one of those in your garden? Full of flowers?”

She smiled. “You noticed! Yes. Like that. But no evil spells or hexes.”

“So you are a witch?”

“Well, no. I was talking about Granny Lily. I’m—” She stopped, suddenly thoughtful.

“So, you’re not a witch?”

“You know, I’m not sure.”

Nick frowned and drained the rest of his champagne, holding out his glass. She poured it full and sat the bottle on the ground beside the blanket.

“I would think you would notice something like that,” he said. Of course she’s a witch McKenzie, she’s had you under her spell since she met you.

“Look, I probably shouldn't have used that word. People don’t know about the Granny Witch tradition at all, and they automatically think black cats and broomsticks and pointy hats. It was mostly about herbal medicine and midwifery.”

“Can you deliver a baby?” he asked.

“Well, certainly.”

“And you practice herbal medicine.”

“Yes.”

“Sounds like you’re qualified. Maybe over qualified.”

“It’s not that simple. Some of them did divination and water dowsing. It’s a tradition requiring training and practice. The Granny Witch passes down all her lore to her designated successor and teaches her everything she knows.”

Grace looked off toward the cemetery and he followed her gaze. The headstones were just distant shapes in the moonlight.

“So your mother— No, that’s your father’s side of the family.”

“Exactly. And anyway, the tradition stopped with Granny Lily. She quit practicing and didn't pass it on to any other female relative.”

“But you said she’s been wandering into your dreams. Does she wander anywhere else?” He looked around them at the silvered meadow and the dark trees, but nothing seemed menacing—just the opposite.

“No. Only in my rather intense dreams. And I’m honestly not sure what she’s trying to tell me.”

He tried to figure out where she was going with all this. Maybe it was the wine. “Well, it sounds like it might be a good thing for your bottom line. You could get additional business these days just by saying you were the descendant of a shaman or medicine woman. I wouldn’t use the word ‘witch’ though, even if they don’t burn them anymore.”

“Why did you say that?” she asked in a sharp tone. In the moonlight, her eyes shimmered green and her pale face was almost translucent, surrounded by flyaway tendrils of dark red. She might be a witch, but she was the most captivating witch he had ever seen.

“What? What did I say?”

“About burning?”

“Well, they used to— Didn't they? I mean—”

“That was in a completely different culture. Here the Granny Witch was essential in the community. The people of these mountains were nothing like that. Granny Lily was burned accidentally.”

“She was— What?”

Grace picked up the bottle and poured her glass full, then downed it without ceremony and was about to pour another.

“Whoa. Slow down there.” He took the bottle and her glass gently and set them both in the grass. “Now, what’s this about burning? Your granny was burned?”

Grace let out a long breath. “Great-great-great. And yes. Accidentally. In a fire.”

“She wasn't killed though. The headstone said—”

“No. Badly burned. Disfigured. She lived a long life.”

“A very long life, if I read the stone right.” He connected some dots and took a guess. “This was the fire that started that feud you were talking about, with your neighbors.”

“Yes. But it was an accident. A bunch of Taggarts and other people were gathered outside the cabin and things got out of hand. One of the Taggarts threw a rock at my Grandpa Zach. It broke a window, and knocked over an oil lamp onto Granny Lily’s dress.”

“An oil lamp.”

“It was terrible. It didn't destroy the cabin, but she was horribly burned. Everyone thought she wouldn't make it, but she recovered. Only, after that, she was rarely seen by anyone outside of the family. And when she was, she was covered head to toe, even wearing gloves on the hottest summer days. We have a family portrait with her in it, but only half of her face is showing.”

“That is tragic. What started the rock throwing?”

“A misunderstanding.”

“About?”

“A patient.”

“Someone died?”

“No. Someone lived.”

Cozy Mystery Blog Tour, Author Guest Post & Giveaway: No Ghouls Allowed (Ghost Hunter Mystery #9) by Victoria Laurie

On a trip to Georgia to see her father, M. J. Holliday finds herself trapped in a haunted mansion and discovers...

THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN—FROM THE DEAD

M.J. has had a distant relationship with her father since her mother died more than two decades ago. But when M.J., her boyfriend, Heath, and BFF, Gilley, take a break from their show, Ghoul Getters, and visit her family home in Valdosta, Georgia, they find Montgomery Holliday a changed man. The source of his happiness seems to be his new fiancée, the charming Christine Bigelow.

But despite the blush of new love, Montgomery and Christine are dealing with a big problem in the form of the antebellum mansion she is having renovated. After a series of strange accidents, the work crew is convinced the place is cursed, and the contractor has walked off the job. At Christine’s request, M.J. and her pals agree to find out if they’re really dealing with some spirited saboteurs and a possessed plantation home.

Eeeek + Ha + Sniffle = Fun For Me!

Here’s the thing…it’s my job to freak you out.  Truly.  And baring that, it’s my job to make you cry.  Baring that, I should at least be able to make you laugh.
And if I can’t make you do any of that,…well then clearly you are dead inside.

The truth is, I loooove writing scary stories that are balanced with either a whole lotta funny, or, something emotionally powerful that makes the reader well up a little.  Sometimes I’m lucky, and my stories are both scary and riddled with punch lines.  Other times the focus is a bit more serious, and funny may not always be appropriate.  Each book is a little different with it’s own unique combo of, “Eeek!” + “Haha!” + “Sniffle!”

Mostly, though, I want your heart to pound, your funny bone to itch, and your eyes to leak.  And it delights me if all of that would happen to you someplace public – the subway, the lunch counter, the library.  Can you tell that I’m a bit of a sadist?

Still, I will give fair warning for my M. J. Holliday fans that my latest release, No Ghouls Allowed, is super-duper scary.  As in…even I had trouble writing once it got dark out.  And to balance that “better keep the lights on” feeling, I had a choice to either bring on the funny, or reach for something a little more emotional.  I went for emotional.  “EEEEK” + “SNIFFLE!”  + perhaps only a soupçon of “ha!”

Mostly I thought that after nine books it was high time for my fans to get a better sense of M. J.’s character.  For those of you who’ve read the series, you know that my plucky little protagonist has been a bit of an enigma, which hasn’t always been on purpose.  I was excited to write this particular installment to finally fully explore what makes M. J.,…well,…M. J.  In the end I can honestly say that it was such a satisfying endeavor.  I finally feel like I’ve presented her fully to you, my fans.  I feel like you now know why she is the way she is, tough, cool, but also a person capable of caring deeply for those she loves, and I’m not sure that in previous books that always came through.

It also, I think, finally makes it clear why M. J. would put up with her BFF Gilley’s antics all these years, because, as you all well know, he can be just a bit of a handful.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever been closer to M. J.’s character than I was while writing this book.  She’s the most like me in this ninth installment – except of course that if someone asked me to go explore a haunted old mansion I’d be all, “Uh…I would, but I think I have to be somewhere else right now.  And tomorrow.  And the day after that.  And for the rest of my life.”

So, yeah, I’m totally willing to scare the pants off you, because, like I said, that’s just fun for me.

And if you could also throw in a chuckle and a sniffle, that’d be super swell, too.  J

Victoria Laurie is the New York Times bestselling author of 26 books and counting. Victoria divides her time between her two adult mystery series, (The Psychic Eye Mysteries, and The Ghost Hunter Mysteries), and a Y/A thriller, When (Formerly titled Death Date), to be released in early January of 2015.

As a professional psychic, Victoria's protagonists - psychic Abigail Cooper, and spiritual medium M. J. Holliday - tackle the tricky world of the paranormal while fighting bad guys and demons with plenty of plucky humor and determination.

And using that keen understanding of the paranormal, Victoria also created the character of Maddie Fynn, a teenager with the unique intuitive ability to predict the exact date of someone's death.

To showcase her writing range, Victoria has also penned a children's epic adventure series, The Oracles of Delphi Keep.

There are two things that I loved about this book.  One - the feel of the old south.  There is NOTHING like antebellum homes in the old south.  They have their own air of romance, don't they? :)  And two - M.J. and her crew.  They never get old or tiresome and M.J. is the perfect sleuth.

The mystery in this book was fantastically written.  Ms. Laurie has always been gifted at writing compelling stories, but this one had help from the setting itself.  The home plays just like an additional character, and it's brilliant!  Add in the paranormal aspect of the story, and you have a beautiful cocktail of spooky and thrilling!

This series is a wonderful addition to any cozy lover's collection, and even 9 books in, it's still going strong.  Do yourselves a favor, and check these out! :)

Book Blitz & Excerpt: Around the Bend by Britney King

If you were to pass me on the street, you probably wouldn't even look twice. I'm that normal. I'm just like you, only wealthier. I have it all. The kids, the family, the dog, a house on the hill. Hell - I'm so cliche, I even have a white picket fence. I guess you could say that I've dotted my I's and crossed my T's. But what I also have - what no one sees in yoga, or at Nieman Marcus, or during the dreadful Ladies Who Lunch charity events I attend (because only God knows why), and perhaps most importantly, in the school pick up line - are secrets.

Deep, dark, deadly secrets.

We all keep secrets, don't we? We all have thoughts in our heads, things we do, things about us that if people knew, they'd be shocked... right? Well, what if one day we just decided to let the cat out of the bag, so to speak.

What if we decided to let the whole world in on our dirty little secrets? And what if along the way, as we were spilling those secrets, we realized that things aren't always what they seem and with that knowledge, it changed the whole story?

In this book, I'm laying it all out there. The unraveling of my life. My coming undone. What one might've seen had they been paying attention.

What I've found in life is people often believe lies before they'll believe the truth. Well, here it is, in a nutshell. I'll let you decide which is which.

Jessica watched him go as she dug her toes further into the wet sand and squeezed them, watching as the muddy water poured over her feet and enveloped them. She let him get a ways ahead before she allowed herself to smile - just a little. All along she'd let him think he was breaking her, but maybe, just maybe, they'd actually been breaking each other.

For those of you who prefer it straight up, no chaser: Mama to five. Writer. Juggler extraordinaire. That just about covers it...

The extended version and in third person no less ;) : Britney is married to a man she adores (when he isn't driving her crazy) and is the mother of FIVE pretty amazing kids, who (surprise!) also have a habit of driving her crazy. Her best guess is that it's genetic. She is the author of two novels, Bedrock and Breaking Bedrock, with plans to release a third and fourth in 2014. In addition, she founded a local network for women in 2012, which as grown to over 1200 members. Currently, she occupies a job she enjoys - serving and running Austin Women's Network. To further prove that she may in fact be certifiably insane, she decided to pursue her dreams and published her debut novel in May of 2013. Then and only then, could she consider her training to be an expert (life) juggler complete.

Spotlight Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway: Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress (The Matchmaker Trilogy #3) by Theresa Romain

One good proposition deserves another...

Heiress Augusta Meredith can't help herself - she stirs up gossip wherever she goes. A stranger to Bath society, she pretends to be a charming young widow, until sardonic, darkly handsome Joss Everett arrives from London and uncovers her charade.

Augusta persuades Joss to keep her secret in exchange for a secret of his own. Weaving their way through the treacherous pitfalls of a polite world only too eager to expose and condemn them, they begin to see that being true to themselves is not so bad... as long as they're true to each other...

Historical romance author Theresa Romain pursued an impractical education that allowed her to read everything she could get her hands on. She then worked for universities and libraries, where she got to read even more. Eventually she started writing, too. She lives with her family in the Midwest.

She tilted her head, setting the loose curl free again. "Are you doing what you wish?"

Doing what he wished? No, of course he wasn't.

Right now he wished he could make her smile as she had when giving away her gloves. He wished he could dispense with his conscience and plead for her to take him as a lover. He wished he could pluck the pins from her sunset hair and send it tumbling over her naked skin, wished he could stop kissing her only to make her cry out in pleasure.

But always, in the face of a wish, came prosaic reality. A scarred wooden table, a plate of mutton and potatoes, a wedge of cheese. An adequate fire and a roof over one's head. Such a reality was perfectly acceptable, even if it didn't hold the luster of a gemlike fantasy.

"I try to wish," he said in a calm voice, "for what I know I might attain. For respectable employment for a reasonable wage. For a reasonable employer."

This brought a faint smile to her features, but the expression fell away in another instant. "That seems a very small dream."

"What on earth do you mean by that? It's a very suitable dream."

"But it's not really a dream, is it? It's what you have now, just shuffled about a bit."

Again, he folded his arms. She lifted her hands, placating. "As you say, it's perfectly suitable. And if you insist that it's exactly what you want, then I suppose it is a dream, after all."

Of course it wasn't a dream. It was good sense. It was practicality. "I don't know what else I ought to wish for. This is my life. I am a man of business for a nobleman." Remembering Chatfield's words, he added, "I am not in bodily danger, nor in mortal peril. It could be far worse."

"It could be. But if you want it to be better..."

"Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to buy happiness."

"No one is fortunate enough for that." She turned over her fork and scratched the tines into the surface of the table. "That's not what I meant. I know happiness can't be bought, or I would have bought it."

Cozy Mystery Blog Tour, Review & Giveaway: Ghost in the Guacamole (Ghost of Granny Apples #5) by Sue Ann Jaffarian

When two sisters feud over the family business, medium Emma Whitecastle doesn’t need a Ouija board to know it spells trouble. But with a little help from the spirited ghost of Granny Apples, she may be able to solve one murder and prevent another . . .

Sisters Lucinda and Ricarda Ricardo—better known as Lucy and Rikki—are at each other’s throats over the family business, Roble Foods. Lucy wants to sell and Rikki is against it. Rikki asks Emma to contact their deceased father, Felix, to help her convince Lucy not to sell.

But the ghost of Felix Ricardo has his own bombshell to drop—his death was not an accident, and Rikki’s life may be in danger if the girls don’t sell. Now it’s up to Emma and Granny Apples to chip away at the mystery and stop a killer from double dipping in death.

The 5th book in my Ghost of Granny Apples series, Ghost in the Guacamole, is about to be released. Wow! The fifth! And that doesn’t count the two Granny Apples e-book novellas that are already out: The Silent Ghost and Dummy of a Ghost.

When this series first started I really had no idea that it would be as popular as it is or would extend beyond a few books. (Not that I’m complaining!) Really, I didn’t. I thought after a couple of books, there wouldn’t be much to write about or that readers would grow tired of it.

Boy, was I wrong! On both counts!

Just as readers are thrilled to see another Ghost of Granny Apples mystery hit the shelves, so am I thrilled when the ideas for stories continue to present themselves to me. Maybe ghosts are whispering in my ear?

Ideas for these fun books are triggered from all kinds of sources, but mostly it’s a place that plants the seed for a story. I love to weave a little bit of history into these stories about a 100-year-old pioneer ghost who helps her great-great-great granddaughter, who is a medium, solve murders or prevent them, and that means researching the geographical area in which the book is located.

For example, the idea for the last Granny Apples book, Ghost of a Gamble, came to me on a trip to Las Vegas and while reading up on the colorful history of the famous gambling mecca.  Ghost in the Guacamole takes place mostly on Olvera Street, the birthplace of Los Angeles, and a destination that I’ve always wanted to feature in a book. Because of Olvera Street’s Mexican heritage, I knew I wanted a title that reflected that but was also catchy and cute.  Thus, Ghost in the Guacamole was born.

Another great thing about letting the setting call the shots is that I often get to research the history of these places in person, so it’s not only fun but educational for me, and I hope for my readers.  One of my favorite research trips was for Gem of a Ghost, the third book in the series. For that I visited Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, and got a personal tour of a haunted prison, which I used in the story.

Currently I’m working on the sixth book in the series. It’s working title is Ghost Writer and it takes place in rural Massachusetts. I’ve recently taken a trip there and returned armed with research books on New England haunted villages and ghosts sightings.  I have a few more interesting ideas for future books, which I hope I will get the opportunity to bring to life on the page.

Now if you’ll excuse me, this writer has to get back to Ghost Writer before the ghosts that whisper to me get restless.  They’re pretty strict task masters.

Sue Ann Jaffarian is the author of the popular Odelia Grey mystery series, the Ghost of Granny Apples mystery series and the Madison Rose vampire mysteries.

She has also launched a Holidays From Hell short story series for e-readers only.

Like the character Odelia Grey, Sue Ann Jaffarian is a middle-aged, plus-sized paralegal. She lives in Los Angeles and writes mysteries and general fiction, as well as short stories.

In addition to writing, Sue Ann is sought after as a motivational/ humorous speaker.

Another wonderful addition to this unique series, Ghost in the Guacamole is my favorite to date.  Sue Ann Jaffarian knows how to transform her book from just words on a page to a beautiful experience that immerses her readers deep into the storyline.  The setting of this story comes to life with every page turn, creating a rich backdrop for such a paranormal and exciting cast of characters.

Emma and Granny are back at it again, solving yet another mystery with quite the repertoire of history.  These two are simply delightful, and the secondary cast of characters are just as wonderful.  I love that the story is told with such detail, proving that the author does her research when she creates these fantastic books!  The mystery itself was fun as well, and one that you don't see coming!

I've said it once, and I'll say it time and time again - this series is VERY MUCH worth the read!  I can't wait for the next one :)

Release Day Blitz, Excerpt & Giveaway: Someone Like Her by Sandra Owens

Someone Like Her
by Sandra Owens
Series: K2 Team, #2
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Release Date: January 6, 2015

Known to the K2 Special Services team as Romeo, ex-Navy SEAL Jake Buchanan has yet to meet a woman he didn't like. There is one though who sets his heart to racing in a way the others don't. She is off-limits, however, and his boss—her brother—has made that crystal clear.

Troubled by a childhood that still haunts her, Maria Kincaid goes searching for a father she's never met—and stumbles into a nightmarish experience. With her life in grave danger, she reaches out to Jake.

Jake, a man who believes he isn't capable of committing to one woman, knows he should stay as far away from Maria as possible. She's in trouble though and he'll just lend a hand, then return to his life as Romeo.

As Jake soon learns, some things are easier said than done.

Middle-of-the-night phone calls weren't unusual. Long accustomed to awakening at odd hours to all sorts of noises, Jake alertly reached for the receiver at the same time he eyed the clock. Had the operation gone wrong?

“Buchanan here.”

“Jake?”

Maria’s voice was the last one he expected. Just hearing it sent his heart into overdrive. He sat up, as if by doing so he could get closer to her. “What’s wrong?”

She laughed. “Why do you immediately assume something’s wrong?”

One hundred and ninety-three miles between them did nothing to conceal the brittle note of her laughter. “It’s two in the morning for one thing. You should be sleeping. Don’t you have an early class?”

Silence.

“Dammit, talk to me.”

“I’m in trouble, Jake.” Her voice cracked on his name.

For her, he would step in front of a bullet, but she wasn't his to protect. She was so far off limits he might as well be wanting the moon.

He forced the words through his teeth that had to be said. “Then you should be calling your brother, not me.”

“I . . . I can’t talk to Logan right now. I just can’t. Please, you have to come.” The words were punctuated by a sob.

Jackson Kennedy Buchanan, in an attempt to be as honorable as his namesakes, opened his mouth to say no, not happening. “Are you home?” He pulled the phone from his ear and glared as if it were responsible for the decidedly inadvisable question. She’d probably had a fight with a boyfriend and needed a shoulder to cry on.

Maria Kincaid—top-of-her-class law student and weeks from graduating—didn't get in trouble. Maria Kincaid, the woman her brother had put off limits by threat of death. The boss didn't want his sister anywhere near a man known as Romeo to his SEAL buddies.
