Cozy Mystery Blog Tour: Author Guest Post, Review & Giveaway: Ming Tea Murder (A Tea Shop Mystery #16) by Laura Childs

It’s scones and scandal for Indigo Tea Shop owner Theodosia Browning in the latest from the New York Times bestselling author of Steeped in Evil

Normally Theodosia wouldn’t attend a black tie affair for all the tea in China. But she can hardly say no to her hunky, handsome boyfriend, Max, who directs public relations for the Gibbes Museum in Charleston. Max has organized an amazing gala opening for an exhibit of a genuine eighteenth century Chinese teahouse, and the crème de la crème of Charleston society is invited.

In the exotic garden staged in the museum’s rotunda, a Chinese dragon dances to the beat of drums as it weaves through the crowd. The guests are serenaded by a Chinese violin as they sample an assortment of tempting bites. And to give them a memento of the occasion, there’s even a photo booth. But Theodosia makes a grim discovery behind the booth’s curtains: the body of museum donor Edgar Webster.

While Theodosia prefers tea service over the service of justice, this case is difficult to ignore—especially after Max becomes a suspect. Now she must examine the life of the fallen philanthropist and find out who really wanted him to pay up…

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES AND TEA TIME TIPS!

Whenever I’m visiting bookstores, libraries, book clubs, and writing groups, I get asked about the business of writing.  How do I do it?  How do I go about starting a book?  What are the rules of mystery writing?

Well, there aren’t any rules per se.  I think any time you color outside the lines, you end up with a piece that’s far more interesting.  But there are a few guidelines that I subscribe to – writing techniques that seem to work well for me.  For one thing, I always begin with a title.  If I don’t have a title nailed down, I can’t seem to get any traction on the book.  So I brainstorm title ideas – trying to come up with at least twenty or so good ones.  For some reason, when I see the right title, it just clicks.  That title then gives me the germ of an idea on how the plot might unfold.  So that’s a biggie right there.

Next I work on characters and character names.  As I line up my cast, I start figuring out what roles they might play.  From there I come up with a major, problematic event.  That is, what happens to kick off my murder mystery?  Is there a fire, an explosion, or a horrible accident?  Or is it something more subtle?  I’ve had poisonings at a tea party, stabbings during a cemetery crawl, exploding antique guns, and pirate skull robberies.  Whatever I come up with, it becomes the catalyst that sets the entire story in motion.

At this point, I’m sketching an outline on a very large piece of paper.  Trying to fill in major events, walk-on roles for all my suspects, and a few more big problems (explosions, a second murder, etc.).  These are all thing that I hope will kick the stuffing out of where you thought the story was going.

To keep everything straight on my outline (which is also set up as a timeline), I color code my suspects.  That way I’m reminded to constantly keep my suspects rubbing shoulders with my protagonist instead of just bringing the killer in (ah ha!) at the end.

When my outline feels good, I transfer it to my computer and start fleshing it out.  When it gets to a fairly substantial eighty pages, I go back to chapter one and write the whole thing straight through.  I try to write ten to twelve pages a day and always feel completely mentally engaged with the book until it’s finally finished.

For my grand finale I like a good chase scene (cars, horses, food trucks, you name it – I’ve done it all.)  And then a final-final scene where the killer is brought to justice, red herrings are explained, and all is right with the world.  Until, of course, the next book comes along.

If you’d like to see how I make like a literary magician and pull all this random stuff out of a hat, just pick up Ming Tea Murder, my newest Tea Shop Mystery.  All the ingredients I’ve mentioned are in there, but I hope they’re woven together so seamlessly that you never really spot them.  Enjoy!

Thank you and blessings to all.

Ms. Childs didn't waste any time getting this one off to a quick and exciting start!  From the very beginning, the mystery begins and takes you on quite the wild ride.  It's a wonderful start to an exhilarating story with a fantastic protagonist in Theodosia.

I thoroughly enjoyed this offering of the series.  It was a nice change of pace from the way that the series had been going, and it solidified for me that Ms. Childs was more than capable of keeping an old reliable series feeling fresh and new.  How exciting!

On top of a great story, the mystery is fun, and there's always the extensive facts and knowledge of all things tea - which makes the book all the more worth reading, in my opinion.  Overall, it's something you'll definitely want to read.  Maybe even while you're having your own home brewed cup of to die for tea.

Cozy Mystery Blog Tour: Author Guest Post, Review & Giveaway: Scorched Eggs (Cackleberry Club #6) by Laura Childs

In Laura Childs’s New York Times bestselling mystery series, Suzanne, Petra, and Toni—co-owners of the Cackleberry Club Café—are equally good at serving up breakfast and serving up justice. This time they turn up the heat on a deadly firebug…

As Suzanne is getting her hair colored at Root 66, she’s stunned to witness the County Services office next door suddenly go up in flames. Concerned neighbors throng the streets, and the fire department does their best. Unfortunately, their best isn’t enough to save longtime civil service worker—and friend to the Cackleberry Club—Hannah Venable.

Soon enough, it’s discovered that an accelerant was used to fan the flames. Someone set the fire on purpose—was Hannah the intended victim? Suzanne, Petra, and Toni vow to smoke out the culprit.

Unfortunately, the list of suspects is as varied as the Cackleberry Club’s menu. When Suzanne finds a possible connection between the fire and the nearby Prairie Star Casino, she comes to realize that the arsonist wanted something very big and bad kept secret. And if the ladies aren’t careful, they may be the ones gambling with their lives.

Writing for the Reader

A guest blog from Laura Childs, author of the Cackleberry Club Mysteries, Tea Shop Mysteries and Scrapbooking Mysteries.

That old adage, "Write what you know," is something I've long since kicked to the curb.

Why? Because I write for you, dear reader.  I write to entertain you, to make you chuckle, and to hopefully touch your heart.  I write mysteries that are (I hope) catchy, clever, and relevant.  I try to imbue each and every one of my novels with plot points that spark your interest - tea, crafts, cats and dogs, recipes, smart businesswomen, problem solving, friendship and romance.  And because I know you lead a busy, hectic, over-scheduled life, I try to give the plot a breakneck pace so you can read quickly.  But... I deliver my books in easily digested chapters to you can lose yourself whenever you find some time.

And because the world is scary enough, my murder mysteries are exempt from the violence that's so often carried in our 24-hour media feed.  I truly believe that most women have tired of thriller-killer-slasher books.  They simply don't want that type of book on their nighttime reading table.

Women today need respite.  They want a story where the female characters are smart, savvy, and caring.  And they certainly don't want foul language, gratuitous sex, or a "preachy" message.

That's why I write the way I do.  And that's why I think you'll get a kick out of Scorched Eggs, my newest Cackleberry Club Mystery.  First of all, you've got three ladies, Suzanne, Toni and Petra, all a hair over forty, who run the Cackleberry Club.  They charm the locals with eggs in the morning and tea in the afternoon.  But in this installment, a raging fire in their small Midwestern town puts them on high alert.  A dear friend has been killed and signs point to arson.  Could it be a vengeful husband, ex-fireman, or expert in explosives?  The ladies try to track down the killer and still keep all their plates in the air (horse show, vintage wedding, county fair, tea parties, and a dinner theatre).  Of course, all this is told in very sassy dialogue with lots of action and romance thrown in for good measure.  And it wouldn't be a Cackleberry Club Mystery if I didn't include recipes for Sour Cream Coffee Cake, Cheese Popovers, Scorched Eggs, and lots more.

Yes, I wrote it just for you, concocted what I think is a banquet of crazy, and then tossed in some major romance for good luck.  If you're looking for a book to cozy up with, to fall through the rabbit's hole with, this just might be it!

Take care!

As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of Laura Childs.  Her books are always so well written, and Scorched Eggs was no different!  This series is a wonderful read for any fan of the cozy genre, and I always recommend it to whomever I can.  Suzanne is a wonderful heroine, and her supporting cast of characters are superb!  They really know how to make a story come together seamlessly.

This particular addition to the series is very clever.  It's funny (as always), and has a mystery that's literally to die for :)  The pacing is perfect and the author's attention to detail never ceases to amaze.  She's tremendously gifted and knows exactly how to tell a great mystery!

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, and can't wait to visit the Cackleberry Club clan yet again! :)

Cozy Mystery Blog Tour: Author Guest Post, Review & Giveaway: Gossamer Ghost (Scrapbooking Mystery #12) by Laura Childs

Carmela Bertrand knows that Halloween in New Orleans means a week of rabble-rousing, costumed craziness—and she can’t wait to get the party started. But when a local antiques dealer turns up dead, Carmela suddenly finds herself in a real-life danse macabre…

An evening’s work deciding on the class schedule for her scrapbooking shop has put Carmela in the mood to kick up her heels. But after some strange noises draw her into Oddities, the neighboring antiques shop, Carmela’s night is abruptly put on hold when a bloody body falls out of a curio cabinet—and into her arms.

While shop owner Marcus Joubert was known for being an eccentric with a penchant for eclectic merchandise, Carmela never thought he was the kind of man who could inspire the passion required to kill. But when Marcus’s assistant—and fiancée—Mavis reveals that a priceless death mask was also stolen, it becomes clear that murder wasn’t the culprit’s sole intention.

Carmela can’t resist the urge to investigate the growing mystery, but as the list of suspects increases, she realizes it’ll take every trick in the book to unmask the killer thief before there’s another night of murderous mischief.

I'm delighted that crafting is suddenly back with a vengeance!  And not just scrapbooking, card making, rubber stamping, and journaling - all those fun goodies that are detailed in my Scrapbooking Mysteries.  Today we're caught up in a veritable tsunami of hot glue gunning, embellishing, collaging, silk-screening, painting, stippling, knitting, felting, and all manner of creative tweaking.

Craft fairs are popping up like errant mushrooms.  Craft stores are selling supplies like crazy.  Schools and churches have scrapped bake sales in favor of craft auctions.  And the craft site Etsy racked up an amazing $29 billion in sales last year.

What's at the heart of all this craft mania?  For one thing, I believe that crafting gives us all a respite from this slick, digital world that we now find ourselves living in.  And when big box stores are filled with row upon row of homogenous products, it's only natural that we want to create something unique.  Something handmade and one-of-a-kind.

And we crafters are a devilishly clever and resourceful bunch.  We love the notion of repurposing paper, labels, ephemera, and even flea market finds.  It's smart, challenging and kind to the environment.  We know that hand made greeting cards (which truly do come from the heart!) will trump a quickie email any day.

According to the Craft & Hobby Association, more than half of all households take part in at least one crafting activity - whether it's actually making soap, or buying bars of soap and then lovingly wrapping them in beautiful paper.  Believe me, you don't need a specially tricked out, designated craft room to reap the joys of crafting.  All you need is a flicker of an idea - and the desire to play around a little bit.  (Remember playing?  From when you were a kid?)

I love weaving craft projects into all my Scrapbooking Mysteries, and my newest mystery, Gossamer Ghost, is no exception.  This one is a Halloween myster, so it's particularly suited for this time of year.  And, as you might expect, there are a few Halloween-themed crafts that are detailed.  Of course, there are also sachets, collaging, and scrapbooking.  And tips on how to rubber stamp your own guest towels and design your own wine labels.

But I'm getting ahead of myself now, because the story's really the thing.  And I think you'll get swept up in the mystery as scrapbook maven Carmela Bertrand discovers that the owner of Oddities Antiques has been murdered and a Napoleon death mask stolen.  She and her BFF Ava scramble for clues, of course.  But a Halloween investigation in New Orleans' French Quarter also means shuffling zombies, a phony French countess, and a tricked out ghost train with a deadly confrontation.  Oh yes, and along the way are New Orleans recipes for Seafood Bisque, Spoon Bread, Baked Porcupines, and Beignets.

Interested?  Then please do enjoy!

All my very best,
Laura Childs

Wow! This book was amazing!  It's thrilling and fun - full of a great mystery, the wonderful characters that we've grown to know and love, and, of course, scrapbooking!  Ms. Childs has created yet another gem of a book to add to this wonderful series.  I've said it once, and I'll continue to say it, she truly is a master at her craft.  Gossamer Ghost is the epitome of what a cozy mystery is and should be, and she continues to improve on this fantastic series.

Book 13, I can't wait to meet you.

I just loved this book.  I loved the premise, and I absolutely love the pacing.  Laura Childs is a master at her craft, and her ability to keep your heart rate up while frantically flipping through the pages is testament of that.  Her characters in this book, particularly Carmela and Ava, are wonderfully written.  Carmela is exactly what you want in a sleuth.  She's smart, a bit sassy, and has a knack for finding herself in precarious situations.  The mystery itself is brilliant, reading more like a light thriller than just a mystery.

I adore this book and this series, and I'm looking forward to so much more!
