Cozy Mystery Blog Tour: Author Guest Post, Review & Giveaway: A Seamless Murder (A Magical Dressmaking Series) by Melissa Bourbon

With a needle and thread, Harlow Jane Cassidy is capable of magic. Her neighbors in Bliss, Texas, on the other hand, are capable of murder....

Any garment Harlow stitches together has the power to grant the deepest desire of whomever wears it. So when she’s asked to sew aprons for a local women’s group, Harlow must get to know each member. First up is Delta Lee Mobley, who doesn’t care much for Harlow’s family—or anyone else in Bliss, for that matter. Granting Delta’s greatest wish could only lead to trouble....

But trouble finds Delta all the same. The day after Harlow delivers her apron, Delta’s body is discovered in the cemetery. It seems one of the townsfolk harbored ill will toward one of their own. Harlow’s sleuthing skills are a cut above the rest, and with a few magical tricks up her sleeve, she is determined to cuff this killer once and for all.

I was in elementary school when my mother taught me to sew. The first big project I made completely on my own, a dress, was hard, definitely, but I am nothing if not dogged and focused when I put my mind to something. The pattern had the option of using two coordinating fabrics which I decided to attempt. I made the whole thing from scrap pieces from my mother’s ample collection.  I worked for hours and hours on that dress, even adding buttons up the straight skirt. I was so proud of myself, but what I remember most is how proud my mom was. That was the beginning of a lifelong love of sewing.

Sewing is, in some ways, a lost art.  I’m teaching my daughter.  She went to a fashion camp this summer.  She doesn’t love sewing (it’s hard work, after all), but thanks to Project Runway, there seems to be a renewed interest in fashion, in general, and she has an interest in it.

But attention spans are different now from when I was a kid, and it’s so easy to go into a store and buy something nice at a fairly reasonable price.  So, why sew?

I asked myself this question as I came up with and wrote Pleating for Mercy, the first Magical Dressmaking mystery. It’s so exciting that A Seamless Murder, book 6 in the series, is now out!  What is it about sewing and fashion that inspires my character, Harlow Jane Cassidy (a descendent of Butch Cassidy)?  What is it about sewing and fashion that inspires anyone who has a love for this craft?

For Harlow, it’s about the creativity, the art, and the heritage of hand sewing in her family.  I have that in my family, as well.  Generation upon generation of women have sewn, quilted, embroidered, and knitted.  It’s a legacy, and that’s something infused in Harlow’s fictional DNA.

One of the best parts of writing this series is that I get to research fabrics, fashion, style, and accessories. This time around, with A Seamless Murder, I got to buy apron patterns, books on the history of aprons, and, along with my mom’s help, we made a slew of aprons. I’ll be giving a few away at the end of the month via my newsletter and I can’t wait!

I don’t have much time to actually sew, but I get to write about sewing machines, technique, and notions. And I get to peruse bridal magazines, and anything else that strikes my sewing fancy. It may not be the same as sitting down at my Pfaff® and creating a color-blocked dress or a quilted tote, but it works. For now.

So tell me, are there any sewers out there?  Any quilters, knitters, or crocheters?  What is your take on sewing for today’s generation of girls (and boys) as compared to what it was in the past?

Melissa Bourbon, who sometimes answers to her Latina-by-marriage name Misa Ramirez, is a middle school teacher by day, and a writer by night. She lives lives in an inspiring century old house in North Texas and loves being surrounded by real-life history.  She fantasizes about spending summers writing in quaint, cozy locales, has a love/hate relationship with yoga and chocolate, is devoted to her family, and can’t believe she’s lucky enough to be living the life of her dreams.

She is the author of the Lola Cruz Mystery series, as well as A Magical Dressmaking Mystery series. She also has written two romantic suspense novels, a light paranormal romance, and is the co-author of The Tricked-out Toolbox, a practical marketing guide for authors.

Another terrific story by Melissa Bourbon! I just love paranormal cozies. They always make for such interesting story lines.  And this one is no exception.  From the start, Harlow is her usual charming (yes, that's intended) self, asked to make aprons for a local women's group. Getting to know these ladies will aid her in making the perfect aprons.  But when one of the ladies turns up dead, Harlow has to do a little digging and will put her sleuthing skills to good use, and help solve the crime.

This book was fun. It had everything I've come to love of this series.  It had a great mystery, a variety of colorful characters and a wonderful heroine.  Harlow has become a favorite of mine amongst the cozy women, and I'm looking forward to visiting with her again soon! :)

When his future meets his past, secrets don't stay secrets for long. Resolved in his need to shield Olivia from her past, he’ll do anything to protect her from her abusive ex. Still craving her submission, his greatest concern is protecting her from his own desires.

An infinite universal force

Eccentric psychic, Eva Storm senses the energy around them. Fate can change and destiny is not always an easy path; sometimes the journey is full of twists and turns. Trust is a very fragile gift. Despite their reluctance to believe, she watches over these disconnected souls, willing the universe to steer them together. Love is the only true magic, for only true love transcends all time.

Tricia Daniels lives in a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada, where she raised three kids as a single parent. Creativity and imagination is something there is never a short supply of in her home. Between her quick wit and wicked sense of humor she found that she has a passion for writing steamy romance novels. Her goal is simple, tell her story, warm a few hearts, shed a few tears, share a silent chuckle, and occasionally, make people blush. That's the official version.  But the simple truth is... I'm not an author. My friends laugh when I say that. I have never aspired to write the next great love story or take the literary world by storm. I'm just a normal woman, struggling to pay the bills and trying to raise my kids in a home where they feel empowered, supported and loved.

Love inspires me to write.  The same way you all feel hen you connect with a fictional character and you feel their emotions, their angst... when you're body gets all warm and squeezy at the good parts. An author experiences those things too when they're writing. I love when the characters take over the story and plot twists develop that I hadn't planned. I love the journey to the HEA even though sometimes that road has a lot of bends in it. I love how two imperfect characters can love each other perfectly. My reward, my inspiration is experiencing through them, a love so deep that I feel it in my own heart.

Stages of Desire
by Julia Tagan
Genre: Historical Romance (Regency)
Release Date: January 5, 2015

To be or not to be—in love…

As a ward of the Duchess of Dorset, Harriet can hardly expect more from a match than the ringing endorsement of “from what I’ve heard, the man is financially secure and his teeth are quite regular.” After all, she’s only the lowly daughter of traveling actors, not the actual daughter of the duchess.
William Talbot, Earl of Abingdon is set to marry the duchess’s daughter. After his elder brother’s scandalous death, his family’s reputation is paramount, and he’ll allow nothing to damage it again. But when Harriet disappears to save her father from debtor’s prison, the scandal threatens William and his intended’s family.

The simple task of fetching the duchess’s runaway ward turns complicated when Harriet insists on traveling with her father’s acting company. William’s forced to tag along, and finds himself entranced. The stage transforms Harriet into a free-spirited, captivating beauty. But someone’s been sabotaging the theater company, and instead of facing scandal, William and Harriet discover a threat not only to their growing passion, but to their lives…

London, 1808

“Miss Farley. I would like an answer to my question.”

She leaped down from the wagon, landing as lightly as a cat. Her back was ramrod straight as she approached him, and she met his eyes with an unwavering gaze. “I presume Her Grace sent you to talk sense into me.”

“She did indeed.”

“Well, you’re too late. We’re preparing for a journey to Birmingham. These are the Farley Players, the esteemed strolling theatrical company you may have heard me mention the other day.”

Esteemed seemed far too grand a word for this shabby group.

Undeterred, she waved her hand with a flourish at William. “I’d like to introduce Lord Abingdon.”

“I’d like a word with you.” He motioned to the door. “Alone. Outside.”

She led the way out of the barn to a small creek, knelt down, and washed her hands, drying them off on her skirt. William couldn’t help but notice the flash of petticoats when she did so, as well as a view of her slender ankle. The sight of her was disconcerting. He cleared his throat in an effort to regain his composure.

“If I remember correctly, Miss Farley, the duchess and I both forbade you from leaving London.”

She pushed her hair off her face with an irritated gesture. “I’m of age now, and am free to do as I please.”

Her arrogance was astounding. William wished he could grab her by the shoulders and give her a good shake. “You would run off with these troublemakers and shame the woman who raised you, as well as the woman I am going to marry? What kind of ungrateful person are you that you’d even entertain such a notion? Is your father near death?”

“Not exactly.” She bit her lip. He’d struck a chord; she didn’t appear as sure of herself anymore. “I don’t mean to do anything to harm Her Grace. She’s been like a mother to me. But she’s not my true mother and, at this moment, I must see my father.”

“What will happen to him if you don’t charge up to Birmingham with your army in tow?”

“He’ll be sent to debtor’s prison.”

William laughed. “Debtor’s prison?”

“I’m deadly serious about this and find your humor most unkind.”

Relief surged through him. The solution was easier than he’d believed possible. “I am sorry, Miss Farley. I didn't realize how simple the solution is. I’ll give you the money. Have one of your troupe bring it to your father, and you and I will return to London. Simple as that. I understand why you wouldn't want to trouble the duchess with this kind of request, but as I have certain plans with regard to the family, I’m happy to extend you this favor. As long as you don’t have other family members popping up requesting handouts. And there will be no more lies.”

“You’re doing me a favor?” She fixed him with a stare. “I’m not some poor relation of yours to order about. I won’t take your money.”

The girl was stubborn when there was no need to be. How had the duchess ever put up with her in the first place? “Take the money and let’s get going. We’ll stay overnight at my estate and have you back in London by tomorrow afternoon.”

She shook her head. “It won’t do. The producer to whom my father is indebted demands a production within the week. He has promised his patrons As You Like It, starring the famous Mrs. Ivey, and nothing less will do.”

“I see. And who is this famous actress? Is she the one who curtseyed so deeply I heard her knees creak?”

Miss Farley almost smiled. “No. That’s Mrs. Kembler. She’s one of ours. Mrs. Ivey is already up in Birmingham, awaiting our arrival.” She placed her hand on his arm, the pressure of her touch as light as a feather. “Sorry, my lord. I know this seems like a rash act. But I need to take care of my father right now. I’m fully capable of comporting myself in a ladylike manner. I have no intention of bringing shame upon Her Grace’s household.”

“So just now, when you were heaving trunks around like a common dockworker, it wasn’t scandalous?” An uncomfortable warmth swept over him, remembering it.

“That was work. Nothing scandalous about work.”

“It was the way you were working.”

“And what way is that?” She put her hands on her hips and breathed heavily. He couldn't help noticing the rise and fall of her chest.

At a loss for words, he stammered as he tried to regain the upper hand. “Never mind now.”

She looked up at him, her eyes wide. “My lord, I understand why you might be worried, and why my running off alone was not proper. I am sorry. Allow me to go to Birmingham and sort out this mess. Please. I haven’t seen my father in a long time.”

She plucked at the fabric of her skirt like a small child might. For a brief moment, he couldn’t help but sympathize with her, remembering his own turbulent history with his father.

“He left me a book of sonnets, you see, but I didn’t receive it until yesterday. He inscribed it to me and, well, it’s difficult to explain. But now I realize how difficult it must’ve been for him to give me away. My mother died when I was born and life had been rough.”

“My mother died giving birth to my younger brother. But you must carry on. Life is not meant to be easy.”

She shook her head slowly, in disbelief. “There are varying degrees of easy. Losing a mother, yes, we’re even on that point. But have you gone for days slogging through the mud in the hopes of finding a warm bed and supper? I remember quite clearly what it’s like to not eat for a couple of days, the way the hunger climbs from your stomach up your throat until even your jaw aches.”

She had him there. He only missed a meal by accident, when he was absorbed in his work. And any cravings were satisfied immediately.

“My lord, I’d like to thank my father for allowing me to live with the duke and duchess. It’s the least I can do.”

He almost suggested she write a letter instead, but stopped himself. What if he were given the opportunity to talk to his father, or his brother, again? What would he say?

He understood her desire to make amends, and her honesty cut him to the core.

“Please, my lord.”

Sounds of merriment spilled out of the barn.
Perhaps they could reach an agreement. “I will allow it, on two conditions.”

“My lord?”

“My former nursemaid, Miss Entwhistle, shall act as chaperone. She’s here with me now and will accompany you to ensure you meet the standards of respectability. Two: You’ll stay with her at all times, and be back in London by next week. I will tell the duchess I allowed you to visit family in Birmingham, and leave it at that. No mention of the theater.”

“I suppose I can agree.”

“Very well, I’ll make the introductions.”

Eager to break the unexpected connection between them, William headed to the carriage while she returned to the barn. Miss Farley’s voice rang out.

“My lord, you might want to come quick.”

“One moment, I must see to Miss Entwhistle first.”

“That’s what I mean.”

William caught up with Miss Farley inside the barn. She pointed in the direction of several bales of hay, where Miss Entwhistle stood wearing a long purple scarf and swaying side to side, singing a colorful ditty at the top of her lungs. The rest of the troupe had gathered around her clapping and singing along.

“I think I’ll have no problems with Miss Entwhistle at all, my lord,” said Miss Farley. “In fact, it appears she’ll be able to teach me a few things.”

Release Day Countdown, Excerpt & Giveaway: Falling Away (Fall Away #3) by Penelope Douglas

Jaxon is the guy she's supposed to avoid. K.C. is the girl he won't let get away...

K.C. Carter has always followed the rules - until this year, when a mistake leaves her the talk of her college campus and her carefully arranged life comes crashing to a halt. Now she's stuck in her small hometown for the summer to complete her court-ordered community service, and to make matters worse, trouble is living right next door.

Jaxon Trent is the worst kind of temptation and exactly what K.C. was supposed to stay away from in high school. But he never forgot her. She was the one girl who wouldn't give him the time of day and the only one to ever say no. Fate has brought K.C. back into his life - except what he thought was a great twist of luck turns out to be too close for comfort. As they grow closer, he discovers that convincing K.C. to get out from her mother's shadow is hard, but revealing the darkest parts of his soul is nearly impossible.

As he made his way back through town, the only sound we could hear was the water on the streets being kicked up under the tires. He'd silenced the radio, we weren't talking... and I felt as if he'd switched off.

Everything had felt alive when he kissed me. His heart under my palm. His breath in my mouth. His hands roaming over my skin as if they were trying to memorize every inch of me.

Now he was a bullet. Going from point A to point B without hesitation.

Until his flat tone finally filled the car. "Come home with me." It wasn't a question, and I couldn't hear a trace of emotion.

I turned to him, stunned. "Are you serious?" I asked. "I don't think I'd be enough for you."

"Don't do that," he shot back. "Don't ruin what happened between us. You were fire in my hands, and I want you to remember it, K.C."

I could feel his eyes on me as I clasped the strap of Tate's messenger bag sitting on the floor.

"Clothed, naked, I don't care..." He trailed off, sounding almost sad. "As long as your lips are on me again."

I shifted in the seat, trying to buy myself time. What I wanted and what I should do were two different things. I'd fought that battle with Liam, my mother, and hell, the list went on. It was true when I told Jax that I wanted to be a mess. But I didn't want to get hurt.

"Thanks for the less," I said. "And the ride. But I'm not like you, Jax. I don't just ignore the rules and take what I want."

"You don't know me." His tone turned defensive. "You know nothing about me."

"And what do you know about me?" I threw back. "Other than you wanted me to spread my legs in high school? You want to have fun with me and nothing more, Jax. Find someone else."

He jerked the steering wheel to the right, and I grabbed the door handle to keep from vaulting over to his side of the car as he sped up into his driveway.

My heart jumped into my throat, and I shot out my hand, grabbing the dash when he skidded to a quick halt in front of his garage.

"Jax, Jesus!" I scolded.

He shut off the car, yanked the parking brake up, and turned to look at me, leaning his forearm on the steering wheel. "You think I don't know you?" he challenged.

I pursed my lips. "Other than that I'm gutless and helpless, no."

He shook his head. "You want to travel. To unusual and dangerous places. You hid a binder full of National Geographic pages in your locker in high school because you didn't want your mom to see all the pictures you'd torn out to keep track of the places you wanted to visit."

My jaw dropped slightly, and I widened my eyes. What?

He continued. "You didn't eat lunch for an entire month senior year, because you saw Stu Levi not eating and found out his single mom was out of work and couldn't afford to put money on his lunch card. So you put your own money on it. Anonymously."

How did...?

"You love dark chocolate," he kept going. "Ricky Gervais, and any movie with singing and dancing." His voice filled the car, and my heartbeat was in my ears. "Except The Wizard of Oz, because the witch freaks you out, right? And you've collected almost an entire set of vintage Nancy Drew books. You had the most badges in your troop in Girl Scouts, and you had to quit swimming when you were fourteen because your mom said that your shoulders were getting too muscular and you wouldn't look feminine. You loved swimming," he added.

I wrapped my arms around my stomach, the air turning cold. Tate and Liam didn't even know all that.

"I didn't drool all over you in high school, K.C. I listened to you. I paid attention to you. What the hell do you know about me?"

And he swung the car door open, climbed out, and slammed it shut, not waiting for an answer.

I sat there, watching him walk into his house and close the door.

Then the tears spilled over, and as much as I wanted to prove him wrong, I couldn't go after him. He didn't know that I'd paid attention as well.

I always saw him.

"Music centers you," I whispered to an empty car, staring at his front door. "You listened to your iPod between classes and while you sat on the bleachers before school ever morning." I smiled, letting more tears run down my cheeks and thinking back to him and his black hoodies, looking so dark. "You love popcorn. Almost every kind and flavor but especially with Tabasco sauce," I said, remembering the times he would come into the theater where I worked. "you hold the door open for women - students, teachers, and even old ladies coming out of Baskin-Robbins. You love movies about natural disasters, but they have to have some comedy in them. Your favorite one is Armageddon." I swallowed and thought about how little I'd ever seen Jax truly smile. "And while you love computers, it's not your passion," I concluded. "You love being outdoors. You love having space." My whole face hurt, the last words barely audible. "And you deserve someone who makes you happy. I'm just not that person."
